Brett Favre
“Loyalty is one of Favre’s most endearing traits.  When famous  player agents wined and dined him after his senior season at Southern Mississippi, he stayed true to a personal injury attorney from Hattiesburg named James ‘Bus’ Cook.  It wasn’t because he had to, it was because he wanted to.   Favre explains, So what if Bus never represented a player before?  I’d never had an agent before, so I figured we were a pretty good match.

I trusted him, I liked him, and I gave him my word.  What else is there?  It turned out to be a great decision on my part.”

“ When I was in college, agents were flocking around me.  It was funny.  Bus may have been worried because all these agents were wining and dining me, flying me places and giving me s..., but he didn’t have to.  It was a joke.   When I went to the East-West Shrine game my senior year (Leigh) Steinberg took me out.  Me and Browning Nagle were hanging out the whole week, having fun, partying.  So Leigh called me up and said he wanted to take me out to eat, that he wanted to talk to me about signing with him.  Typical me. I said, ‘Do you mind if Browning comes along?’  ‘Well, I’d really like to talk to you alone,’ Steinberg said.  ‘We’re kind of hanging this week,’ I said.  Steinberg said all right.  Steinberg picks us up in a tiny, two-seater Mercedes.  It was an older one, pretty cool.  I think he still wanted to talk to me alone so that’s why he brought the small car.  But I thought, what the hell, and hopped back in the hatchback and let Browning sit in the front.  I’m all scrunched up in the back, but it was a blast.  Leigh talked to me the whole night, but I wasn’t interested.  So he ends up signing Browning.  A year later, I’m talking to Browning, who was drafted by the Jets right after I was picked by the Falcons.  I ask him ‘How’s it going with Leigh?’  Browning said, ‘S..., I can’t get in touch with him.’  I go ‘Really, I talk to Bus every day.”

“One of the toughest things in pro sports is choosing the right agent.  Some people are surprised when I talk about Bus as my friend.  But that’s what he has become, one of my best friends…We trust each other, and that’s rare in professional sports.  The only reason we signed a contract is that the NFL says you have to…I think guys are screwing up by not going with someone they’re comfortable with.  They get all caught up in the money.  That’s just not that big a deal.  The money will come if you deserve it.  How you get along with people matters more.  Look at Bus and me.  We’re a perfect match.  We’re both a little crazy.”
